Big news! My dear friends @wildroutesireland and I Big news! My dear friends @wildroutesireland and I are busy bringing a brand new Ireland retreat into being.

Our 2022 Wild Ireland Herbal Retreat was an incredible journey, and we're taking that trip one step further by incorporating new Irish makers and crafts in our journey.

Our 2024 trip is created for makers, plant lovers, aspiring herbalists, and other creatives who are longing to refill their cups in Ireland's magical countryside.

Our retreat will take place off the beaten path and far from the tourist circuits of Ireland, in July 2024. We'll slow our pace as we visit ancient sacred sites and meet many sacred herbs; be still as we sit with thousand-year oaks; make herbal potions alongside seasoned herbalists; explore traditional spirituality with the wonderful @coiresois; and busy our hands with traditional handicrafts alongside Irish craftspeople.

Our retreat lodging is magical, the food is exquisite, and the pace is restorative (feel free to forage seaweed and take an evening bath, wander the wooded trails, or meditate at the quiet bay during our stay).

I can't say enough about how this journey and these souls have transformed me. And I can't wait to share it with you.

Want to refill your cup and join me here? Registration for adults and mature teens will open soon. I'll be releasing the retreat first to my Herbal Retreat mailing list. If you'd like to be added, drop me a DM with your email address then leave me a comment below. I'll be sure to add you.

But I'm back at it once again, decoding menstruation for teens and preteens. Best of all, my 16-year-old daughter, Lupine @lythari_arts is my illustrator for this piece, sharing her gorgeous drawings with the world. What a delight as a mama to see her art in print, alongside my words. Thanks for having us within these pages once again, @taprootmag. It's a joy.

Did anyone come last summer and would love nothing more than to attend again in 2024? OR did you miss last summer's excursion and can't wait to attend for the first time? I'd love to hear from you. Should we do this again?

We have this long running joke in our family that We have this long running joke in our family that I’m a nerd who gets excited about all manner of nerdy things—drumlins in particular. This bit of family lore originated in me getting EXCITED about a huge cluster of drumlins I noticed on our GPS on a road trip in Ireland, resulting in a lengthy detour and much marveling at said hills (#noregrets).

And now, anytime I use my “teacher voice” (this is a thing I reportedly do when I’m excited and talking about nature???) one of my kids will lilt in their best mama-teacher voice, “this is a drumlin…” and we laugh (in that wholesome “making-fun-of-mama’s-love-of-glacial-depositions” sort of way).

So imagine my absolute delight when I pulled our car into a wayside and parked DIRECTLY IN FRONT of this glorious sign. Drumlins! They’re thrilling, I tell you. (Especially living as we do in an unglaciated part of the state, making them extra special, obvs. But I digress.)

All this to say embrace your inner nerd. You’re in good company.

Drumlins! (Don’t even get me started in eskers.)
A place very dear to me was lost to fire last nigh A place very dear to me was lost to fire last night. My heart shatters for the pain of the family who calls that house home today. I also ache for for loss I feel within. Because we, too, have stories here. A peaceful homebirth, two terrifying seizures, a business breathed bravely into life. 6 birthdays each we celebrated within those walls. Countless pillow forts and sewing projects; visits from the tooth fairy and sleepless nights.

Only four families have ever called those walls home, and at 6 years we were the shortest guests of all. Even so, we found love and loss here; laughter and grief—like families and houses everywhere do.

And so seeing the damage this afternoon as cold rain drizzled down, I wept. I wept from my own sadness as well as for another family’s traumatic loss. And I wept for the spirit of this house itself. A house feels like a person to me, and so I grieve.

*When the Go Fund Me is live for our friends for their post-fire recovery, I’ll be sure to share if here.
One photo per day in 2023. No staged, not perfec One photo per day in 2023.

No staged, not perfect, but true. (I’m certain I’ll abandon this plan before March roars in like a lion. Until then, I’ll embrace the eternal imperfections that construct my messy life and share a few photographs.)

Stay kind. Drink water. Be authentic. Find your feisty.
