Today you can find me over on Whip-Up. I was honored to be asked by Kathreen to write a post for her guest blogger series and I shared a tutorial for crafting a free-spirited wool birthday crown or play crown. Click on over to my post and have a peek.

I love this project. Truly. Love it. That would explain why we have two children and four crowns.

Love,
Rachel

Findus and Oatsie wish you a snuggly morning. Findus and Oatsie wish you a snuggly morning.
Through the years I've mentored multiple students Through the years I've mentored multiple students from the local Waldorf school for their 8th grade products. I've taught them how to safely formulate and make skin care (including soap), skills I envision them taking with them into their adult lives.

This mentorship does not involve payment of any sort, just me doing what I love and sharing it with these curious kids.

And it got me thinking... what if we normalized mentoring one another as adults as well? Whether sewing or sourdough, soapmaking or skiing, what if we all got comfortable ringing up a total stranger and saying, "Hey! You're really good at this thing I'd love to learn. Would you teach me?" and then welcoming those calls about the things we love to do.

I'm not taking issue with charging/paying for what people have to share (indeed, I teach paid classes as well), but rather normalizing the notion of volunteer mentorship in our communities for the sake of growing richer communities & people within them. Adding a new option without taking one away.

What would your world look like if we made this a regular practice done purely for the joy of sharing what we love? And what do you love that you’d be delighted to share?

Did anyone come last summer and would love nothing more than to attend again in 2024? OR did you miss last summer's excursion and can't wait to attend for the first time? I'd love to hear from you. Should we do this again?

It was a busy, bustly, delightful weekend. And I’m oh so happy to be home again!

We have this long running joke in our family that We have this long running joke in our family that I’m a nerd who gets excited about all manner of nerdy things—drumlins in particular. This bit of family lore originated in me getting EXCITED about a huge cluster of drumlins I noticed on our GPS on a road trip in Ireland, resulting in a lengthy detour and much marveling at said hills (#noregrets).

And now, anytime I use my “teacher voice” (this is a thing I reportedly do when I’m excited and talking about nature???) one of my kids will lilt in their best mama-teacher voice, “this is a drumlin…” and we laugh (in that wholesome “making-fun-of-mama’s-love-of-glacial-depositions” sort of way).

So imagine my absolute delight when I pulled our car into a wayside and parked DIRECTLY IN FRONT of this glorious sign. Drumlins! They’re thrilling, I tell you. (Especially living as we do in an unglaciated part of the state, making them extra special, obvs. But I digress.)

All this to say embrace your inner nerd. You’re in good company.

Drumlins! (Don’t even get me started in eskers.)
