It's so easy to get lost in my to-do list.
So easy that I very nearly missed this day.
This frost.
This magic.
This medicine.
Because the animals need tending and the bathroom needs cleaning and… you know the rest.
Because there's never quite the time we want.
But always just the time we need.
As Pete and I headed down to the barn on Sunday for morning chores we looked down the valley and he said, "Look at this. We live in a painting."
It was breathtaking.
A nice place to have to do chores, that's certain.
And we did. Farm chores. Kitchen chores. And then – enough.
Enough with the work.
This magic won't last.
So we suited up and got in it.
We hiked to the creek, the kids on snowshoes.
And then we forgot about work and simply played, each in our own way.
Lupine made a prairie bouquet that now graces our kitchen.
Sage lay on his stomach, pushing the snow drifts into the creek and watching them swirl downstream.
Pete explored the woods, looking for tracks.
And I lay on my back in the snow made pictures of the frost.
We each quietly lost ourselves – and our troubles – in the nature.
It was medicine.
Of the best possible sort.
Exactly! The hardest part is saying enough work and just go out there. But once you do that…
Echoed in my thoughts as well!
‘Just get out there and do it’ is what I need to remind myself. A stern talking to and i usually listen.
🙂
I can feel the loveliness of this day. And yes, you certainly do live in a painting! Thanks for sharing.
It is. It really is. You know what? *throws tools down* I’m getting out there too. It’s been too long. Thanks for the reminder xx
I can’t even imagine snow so deep. Here in the desert we turn light a fire for 50 degrees!
WOW. Look at those crystals! Magic indeed! xox
Beautiful winter scenes. Especially love the last several. Winter blue skies are so vivid!
Breathtaking! And the blue sky!!! I can feel spring round the corner!
You really captured the beauty in your photos. The ice crystals are beautiful. I have been hanging around the house today, but your post inspired me to get out and go for a walk in the snow and cold. Just what I need right now. 🙂
Hello, I’m soo thankful for these posts! This is the 2nd time my husband said, “you need her” after reading a blog of yours to him. The first time was when I read your article about “cropping” made me laugh and feel so at ease. I signed up for your newsletter, I’ve never done that before! And every time I see one of your posts in our mailbox, I click on it right away! Today for instance we had a hookie day from our homeschooling – I’ve got a 4 and 6 year old boy- and it was a gorgeous snowy day here in Montana where we are trying to build a house, we moved in but are still working on finishing it, no insulation or sheet rock yet, but my husband keeps the wood stove blazing through the night and we are all in love with trying to live a simpler life! We moved up here from LA where my husband studied to be a pastor, and now has been hired as the Baptist pastor of a church that had died..it’s growing now but he still supports us by construction work, which is what he used to do before being encouraged by our old pastor to go into ministry, but we are hoping to learn more and more how to live of the land, make our own small farm/ranch…dreaming of getting chickens in the spring maybe a goat (sense we have dairy allergies in this crew)…actually found your blog by googling natural treatments for whooping cough, about a year ago I got diagnosed with celiac disease and didn’t know a thing about gluten, natural meds, organic??? Been reading and kearning a lot and doing a total switch over! Few, what a year! Just want to let you know, I’m saying thanks in my prayers for your posts! They have been a big help in making these changes with laughter and gratitude! Thanks for helping me over the guilt today! God bless! Holly Hunter
A perfect day.. I could use one of those!
I think nature, being perfectly balanced itself, rubs off on us and puts us right.
I went outside in a little blizzard to take a few pictures. <3 Love Love Love. Such a pretty post, and your pictures are GORGEOUS. Mother Nature is amazing!
We have had this frost medicine as well. It has been magical here with the ice clinging to the trees and crystals forming on everything.
So lovely, Holly. Thanks for sharing your words!
