I really can't remember when I've had so much fun.

We spent yesterday with some dear friends – our first official farm visitors – sledding, drinking tea, and eating good food. They headed home as the sun went down and we decided that popcorn and almond butter apples were in order. For dinner. (Our answer to pizza or take-out night I suppose.)

With all that extra time we decided to make a disastrous mess out of our kitchen anyway. And make art! Together.

Inspired by Amanda's family art project, a similar piece done by a local friend, and also the projects I shared with you here on Friday, we gathered some supplies.

We wanted our piece to be part art and part manifestation board.

Acrylic paint, a big canvas (a board would do), some old calenders, books, and catalogs – and lots and lots of glitter and Mod Podge got us rolling. We worked for hours, laughing and cooperating side by side.

Our shared vision (aside for having fun and making something pretty) was to focus on our farm and the life we're setting out to create here.

A new year. A new home. An new era.

Lupine wanted lots of flowers, Pete was all about warmth, honey bees and lavender, I was seeking images of closeness, family, and community, and Sage focused on images of kids out in nature.

When it was finished we all just knew.

And this morning when we woke everyone gathered around it, beaming at what we made.

Family art. No rules. Just cooperation and creativity.

I highly recommend it.

Happy New Year to you and your families!

 Love,

Rachel

    That is so beautiful, Rachel!
I hope the new year brings you and your family all the bright things you deserve. (And I can’t wait to read all about it in this space!) xo

Lovely, I’m very happy that you have a new home and dream come true, also we are -finally- almost done here, preparing, organizing and decluttering the house, so we can have you here whenever you’ll fell like it.

A Big Huge in this very meaningful new ride on earth, a new year full of expectations for you.

Really inspirational. I might actually attempt this with my kids this week. I am so not an artist though and at the risk of sounding silly, what is the difference between glue and mod podge? Also, what is acrylic paint? I have some simple tempera washable paints that came with my children’s art easel but I know nothing about “real” art supplies. Thanks!

Mod Podge is made for decoupage, but you can also use diluted white glue but I hear the results are not as consistent or long-lasting. But use what you have! Mod Podge also seals and protects but if you aren’t worried about it lasting forever go for it. Acrylic paint is the type that artists use to mix their own colors. Tempra washes off of clothes more easily and is a-ok to use. Have a blast! I’m glad you were inspired.

I love this! We are renting a house and so ready to be out of here and into our new, full of light, built right for large family homeschooling home. This would be a great thing to do together while we wait- and we’ll have a meaningful piece of art for our new home. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂

Ok, I’ve got to know…almond butter apples? They sound yummy! Is it just apples smeared with almond butter? or is there more to it?

  8. Rachel Wolf says:

Apples sprinkled with cinnamon, dipped into almond butter (also sprinkled with cinnamon). Simple but yummy. (And a fine excuse for a dinner.)
